Buhumuza Province

Buhumuza Province is one of Burundi’s five newly established provinces, formed from the former provinces of Muyinga, Ruyigi, and Cankuzo, with Cankuzo serving as its capital. Located in eastern Burundi, Buhumuza occupies a strategic position that connects Burundi to neighboring countries and plays a growing role in national development.

The province shares borders with Burunga, Gitega, and Butanyerera to the southwest, west, and northwest, Rwanda’s Eastern Province to the north, and Tanzania’s Kagera and Kigoma regions to the northeast and southeast. Buhumuza’s landscape is remarkably diverse, characterized by alternating lowlands and highlands. From north to south, the province includes the Bugesera Depression, Bweru Plateau, Ruvubu River Valley, Buyogoma Plateau, and the Moso lowlands, offering rich agricultural and ecological diversity.

Buhumuza is home to Ruvubu National Park, Burundi’s largest national park, which protects the Ruvubu River valley as it crosses the province from southwest to northeast. The province also contains the Gisagara Protected Landscape, located near the Tanzanian border, further highlighting its environmental and tourism potential.

Administratively, Buhumuza is divided into seven communes: Muyinga, Ruyigi, Cankuzo, Butihinda, Gisuru, Gisagara, and Butaganzwa.

Economically, Buhumuza is a key contributor to Burundi’s development. Agriculture remains the backbone of the province, supporting a sector that contributes roughly 30% of Burundi’s GDP. The region benefits from fertile land suitable for fruit farming, including avocado production, and possesses valuable mineral resources, notably gold. In communes such as Cankuzo, local initiatives promote castor oil production, organic fertilizers, and biofuel development, reflecting a shift toward sustainable and value-added industries.

Buhumuza also plays an important role in regional trade and national development strategies, particularly under Burundi’s Vision 2040–2060. Authorities are investing in infrastructure modernization and encouraging the formalization of trade through electronic billing systems to increase transparency and tax revenue.

Most importantly, Buhumuza serves as a vital gateway between Burundi and Tanzania. The Kobero border, the country’s main eastern trade corridor, is located in this province. A large share of goods imported from Tanzania passes through Kobero before reaching other provinces across Burundi, making Buhumuza a critical hub for commerce, logistics, and cross-border trade.

With its strategic location, natural wealth, agricultural strength, and growing infrastructure, Buhumuza stands as a province of opportunity, linking Burundi to the region while offering strong potential for tourism, investment, and sustainable growth.
